Valley Water is monitoring the impacts of one of the worst heatwaves in California in recent years. A Flex Alert has been issued statewide and controlled power curtailments are in effect, which can lead to temporary power outages at Valley Water facilities.
“The prolonged heat is a challenge, but Valley Water is prepared to continue delivering safe clean water to all residents and businesses in Santa Clara County,” said John L. Varela, Chair Pro Tem of the Valley Water Board of Directors.
Over the past few years, Valley Water has successfully demonstrated our preparedness for potential power outages by operating during previous PG&E’s Public Safety Power Shutoff events with no disruption of service to the community.
Valley Water has specific plans to address the challenges of responding to power outages in times of extreme weather. Preparation for power outages includes:
- Valley Water treatment plants have backup power available.
- Our stock of fuel for backup generators is above 95% capacity, and vendor contracts are in place if more supply is needed.
- Mobile generators are ready for pre-deployment to strategic locations in the field to make sure our facilities can continue to operate.
If we do experience an extended power outage, we do not anticipate an impact on water quality. Valley Water will continue to test and monitor our treated water and ensure it meets or exceeds all state and federal requirements and standards.
While we are uncertain when a power shutoff may occur and how long it may last, Valley Water is well positioned to respond and maintain uninterrupted service to the community.
Valley Water is also working to reduce energy consumption at our own facilities at this time. Please visit flexalert.org to learn about the ways you can help save energy during the heatwave.
