Voters overwhelmingly approve the renewal of the Safe, Clean Water and Natural Flood Protection Program
In November 2020, Santa Clara County voters overwhelmingly renewed the Safe, Clean Water and Natural Flood Protection Program (Safe, Clean Water Program). The measure needed 66.67% to pass and garnered more than 75% of votes in the November 2020 election. The renewed Safe, Clean Water Program replaced the program that voters approved in 2012 (2012 Program).
To ensure transparency and accountability to the voters, the ballot measure also created an Independent Monitoring Committee, appointed by the Valley Water Board of Directors. The renewed Independent Monitoring Committee (IMC) will annually review the program’s progress and report its findings and make recommendations to the Board. The IMC will also review each proposed five-year implementation plan before its submittal for Board approval. Furthermore, every 15 years, the IMC will review and recommend to the Board and the general public whether the special tax should be reduced or repealed or maintained to build additional projects to accomplish the community-identified Safe, Clean Water Program priorities.
