Director John L. Varela, District 1
Director Varela was appointed to the Santa Clara Valley Water District Board of Directors in December 2015. He was elected by the voters in November 2016; re-elected in 2018 and 2022 and his current term expires in 2026. He is currently the 2023 Board Chair.
Director Varela serves on the Valley Water’s Board Ethics and Conduct Committee, the Agricultural Water Advisory Committee, the Santa Clara Valley Water Commission, and the Joint Water Resources Committee with the Cities of Morgan Hill and Gilroy.
Director Varela also participates as a board member for the Association of California Water Agencies, Joint Venture Silicon Valley, Pajaro River Watershed Flood Protection Authority, San Luis & Delta Mendota Water Authority, and South County Regional Wastewater Authority.
Director Varela is a former Morgan Hill city mayor and councilman.
