2013 Comprehensive Stewardship Grant Program

The 2013 Comprehensive Stewardship Grant Program (Grant Program) helps fulfill the stewardship component of the district’s mission, including Ends Policy 4.1, protect and restore creek, bay, and other aquatic ecosystems, with the objective (4.1.1) to preserve creeks, bay and ecosystems through environmental stewardship. Grant funding comes from the 2000 Clean, Safe Creeks and Natural Flood Protection program.

The Grant Program is consistent with the definition stating:

Stewardship means to entrust the careful and responsible management of the environment
and natural resources to one's care for the benefit of the greater community.

Objectives of the Grant include

  • Creation or restororation of riparian and tidal habitat
  • Protection for endangered species
  • Removal of fish migration barriers/Installation of fish ladders
  • Removal of non-native, invasive plants
  • Revegetation of native plant species
  • Implementation of pollution prevention activities
    within south Santa Clara County
  • Implementation of pollution prevention activities countywide
  • Implementation of trail construction activities
  • Implementation of trail mapping activities

Background

On Jan. 22, 2013, the Board of Directors authorized funding for this 2013 grant cycle in the amount of $794,000. This is the first cycle of this Grant Program, however it is essentially a combination of the Trail and Open Space Grant Program, Environmental Enhancements Grant Program, and Watershed Stewardship Grant Program (Pollution Prevention categories) from past years consolidated and refined for the 2013 grant cycle. The Grant Program supports several sections of the district’s Clean, Safe Creeks and Natural Flood Protection Program, including Outcomes 2.1, 2.5, 3.2 and 4.1.

On June 25, 2013, the Board of Directors approved grant awards in the amount of $731, 273 to the six top ranked projects received under the 2013 Comprehensive Stewardship Grant Program. An additional $62, 727 was approved for the seventh ranked project following further review by District CEO. This totals the $794,000 authorized for the Grant Program.
